| Three Bangladeshi women filed a High Court writ after allegedly being stopped from travelling to Nepal despite having valid passports and visas. |
Three Bangladeshi women—Rifa Tamanna, Sohani Islam Samapti and Naznin—have filed a writ petition with the High Court after alleging that immigration officials at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport prevented them from travelling to Nepal.
The incident reportedly took place on August 8, when the three friends were preparing to travel to Nepal. According to their account, they were adults, held valid passports and visas, had no criminal cases against them and had received consent from their families for the trip.
Despite having the required travel documents, the women alleged that an immigration officer stopped them from boarding their flight. They said they were questioned about their marital status, whether they were unmarried, whether their families had permitted the trip and why they were travelling without a male companion.
Following the incident, the women reportedly lodged a complaint at the airport seeking an explanation for the decision. After allegedly receiving no response, they sent a legal notice to the immigration authorities.
When no response was received to the legal notice, their lawyer, Ishrat Hasan, filed a writ petition with the High Court. The petition alleges that the incident violated the women's constitutional rights, including freedom of movement and equality before the law.
The petition seeks preservation of relevant CCTV footage from the airport, action against officials allegedly responsible for the incident and compensation for the three women.
The case has drawn attention to questions surrounding women's freedom of movement and the legal basis for any additional restrictions on unmarried women travelling abroad. The response of the immigration authorities and the High Court's proceedings are expected to clarify the legal issues involved.
