Preserve Hilsa Fish’s Original Taste with These 3 Methods

Discover 3 simple ways to preserve Hilsa fish while keeping its authentic taste, aroma, and natural flavor for longer.

Hilsa is the national fish of Bangladesh and is loved by everyone for its exceptional taste and distinctive aroma. However, to preserve its original flavor, wonderful aroma, and natural oiliness for a long time, it is important to know the proper way to store it.

If Hilsa is stored incorrectly in the freezer, its taste and texture may deteriorate, making the fish taste bland. Generally, after bringing Hilsa home from the market, keeping it unwashed and storing it in an airtight container or zip-lock bag in the deep freezer can help maintain its quality for several months. Here are three ways to preserve Hilsa while keeping its taste intact.

1. Wrap the Whole Fish in Plastic or Paper

After bringing a whole Hilsa home, do not wash it. If there is any blood or dirt on the surface, gently wipe it with a clean dry cotton cloth or tissue. Do not remove the scales.

Next, wrap the fish tightly with clean newspaper, baking paper, or plastic wrap.

Then place the wrapped fish inside a thick polythene bag. Press out as much air as possible and seal the bag tightly before placing it in the deep freezer. Proper wrapping helps protect the fish from exposure to air and can help preserve its aroma and natural oils for an extended period.

2. Cut into Pieces and Store in an Airtight Container

If there is not enough space in the freezer to store a whole fish, cut the Hilsa into cooking-sized pieces. Avoid washing the pieces; instead, gently wipe away any blood and excess moisture with tissue.

Arrange the pieces neatly in a good-quality airtight plastic or glass container. If you need to place one layer of fish over another, you can put a sheet of food-safe plastic between the layers.

Close the container tightly and place it in the deep freezer. Keeping air out helps maintain the fish’s quality, taste, and aroma for longer.

3. Ice-Blocking Method

Ice blocking is another method that can be used to keep fish fresh for an extended period. Place the whole raw fish in a large food-safe plastic container and add enough clean water to completely submerge the fish.

Place the container directly in the deep freezer. Once the water freezes, the fish will be enclosed in a layer of ice.

This method reduces the fish’s direct exposure to cold air, which can cause surface drying. As a result, the fish can retain more of its moisture and natural texture during frozen storage.

With proper storage, you can enjoy the authentic taste and aroma of Hilsa for a longer time.
